Halftime Magazine Celebrates One Year of “the Sights, Sounds and Spirit of the Marching Arts”

Remember life a year ago? Gas prices were under $3. The Presidential election wasn’t on the radar screen. And the Halftime Magazine experience hadn’t yet begun.

Now with the release of the July/August 2008 issue, we’re proud to announce the one-year anniversary of Halftime Magazine, a bimonthly print publication and online community for the marching arts.

“Marching band is a musical art, a visual art, a sport and a lifestyle,” says CEO/publisher Christine Ngeo Katzman. “Halftime Magazine showcases our common bonds—our pride as we march to the field, our sense of loss when our athletic team loses, and our feelings of accomplishment after every performance. At the same time, Halftime celebrates personal stories and challenges. We believe that every ensemble and every performer has a story.”

At a time when print magazines struggle to survive, Halftime Magazine has been welcomed into the marching community. According to Youth Markets Alert, marching band students are “edging their way onto the A-list and into marketers’ consciousness,” and Halftime Magazine helps sponsors in this effort.

Katzman launched the publication while earning her MBA from the University of Southern California (USC), where she won “Best Graduate Business Plan” and “New Launch Award” for the concept. She also graduated from Northwestern University with a journalism degree and performed with the marching band in the 1996 Rose Bowl.

Halftime Magazine covers high school band, college band, drum corps, winter guard, drum line and pageantry. Recent articles focused on drum corps economics, military musicians and college band scholarships. Featured bands have included USC, Indiana University, The Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps and Vista Murrieta High School in Murrieta, Calif.

Halftime Magazine will host its one-year celebration in Bloomington, Ind., during the Drum Corps International World Championship from Aug 6 to 9.
